JESUS SHOWED LOVE

By Grady Sutton

“But God shows His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8 Over and over in the New Testament we see the tender-hearted love of the Lord Jesus. It was on full display for the world to see. But how can you know that Jesus really loves you? How can you really believe that His love will not leave like others who have abandoned you? Look to the cross, the place where God manifests His love for sinners. Each wound, each stripe across His back, each nail declares His love. Every thorn piercing His brow, every mark and spittle on His face evidences His words of love. He did not simply say, “I love you;” He spilled His crimson blood to prove His profession. We are called to love as Jesus loved. “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends” John 15:13. “Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another” 1 John 4:11. How can you show Christ’s love today? In the words we say, the grace we show, and the kindness we give, may others see Jesus’ love in both word and deed.

ACTION POINT

Look for someone to love today. Do something unexpected for someone. Buy coffee or a meal for the person behind you in line. Give money to the homeless person standing on the street corner. When you do, tell them that Jesus loves them.

STUDENTS

When is the last time you showed someone love? When is the last time you loved someone who is difficult to love? Find someone who is difficult to love and do something kind for them. Give them a piece of gum. Offer a kind word. Go out of your way to use your actions to point them to Christ.

KIDS

Talk with your children about how they can show love to the people around them. Pick someone in your neighborhood that you can show love to this week by baking them something or simply writing a friendly note.

PRAYER

Lord, forgive me for the times when I have shown shallow love, instead of Your true, unconditional, self-sacrificing love. Help me be creative in the ways that I show Your love to others. May I never forget how much You gave because of Your love for me.
