“When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom He loved standing nearby, He said to His mother, ‘Woman, behold, your son!’ Then He said to the disciple, ‘Behold, your mother!’ And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home.” John 19:26-27

Jesus demonstrated the importance of family by caring for His mother Mary, even as he was in His dying moments. One of the seven phrases that came from Jesus’ mouth as He was on the cross was to give his disciple John the responsibility of caring for Mary. Jesus cared so deeply for His mother that He wanted someone He trusted to take care of her for the rest of her life.

As followers of Jesus, we are to show compassion and care for those in our family. Our families are our mission field, and God has placed us right where He wants us to be. Maybe you have family relationships that need mending; pray that God will help you as you forgive hurt feelings and choose to love.

If someone in your family does not have a relationship with Jesus, talk to them about your story and what your relationship with Jesus means to you. If there is a relationship that needs mending, mend it. Forgive that person and start to have a relationship with them.

Show gratitude and thankfulness for the family that God has given you. Take time today to let them know how much you love and appreciate them. Do something kind for them.

Talk about how they can show love in a tangible way to their brother, sister, or cousin. You could also discuss how to show obedience to parents.

Jesus, thank You for the family that You have given me. Thank You for how they love me, are there for me when I need them most, and for how they have had an impact on my life. Help me to make it a priority to share the gospel with those in my family who do not know You.
